Q: Platform - with which versions of Microsoft Windows is JDHEmbed compatible?

A: JDHEmbed has been extensively tested with all 32 bit Windows PC versions prior to XP. It has since been extensively used with XP. Version 2.0 is in use with Windows Vista without any reported problems. However it is highly recommended that the demonstration version (available free of charge) is first downloaded and used to ensure not only no technical issues, but also that it fully meets your expectations.

Q: Image file type - can I convert the BMP file with my embedding to another file format, for example as a compressed JPG type for faster e-mail transmission?

A: NO. Conversions that make the file smaller, and even some that don't, do not maintain the full picture information even though this may not be detectable to the eye. The file with the embedding, being a standard BMP file, will convert without problem, but the embedded information in most cases will be destroyed. ZIP the final BMP file instead, this is "lossless" compression.

Q: Image sources - I don't have ".bmp" files, where should I get them?

A: Most photo viewers may be used to generate ".bmp" versions of images from other formats (".jpg" for example), generally as a drop down box option under the "Save as" function. For a "quick start" a ".bmp" photo is available for download on the Photo page.

Q: Cropping - sometimes the cropping outline in the monitor panel reverts to the default position and shape, why?

A: This occurs when the area to be cropped changes, needing a fresh outline to be established. For example when a new document for embedding is selected or a new BMP carrier file selected. It also happens when the encryption option is changed, as there is generally an associated small change in size. It also occurs if the Code is changed in a way resulting in a change to the encryption option.

Q: Information button - for a .BMP file not accepted for embedding, the Information button is sometimes active, sometimes not, why?

A: If the .BMP file is of a Windows type that is unsuitable, the Information Button is active, enabling the reason for its rejection to be determined, refer to the Help system for details. When the Information Button is inactive, the .BMP file cannot be recognised as a Windows type, and the information therefore cannot be extracted. The message shown in the monitor panel area indicates this difference.

Q: Monitor panel - the monitor panel shows false images, incorrect shapes, and exhibits other unpredictable behaviour.

A: If files are moved in or out, or are renamed, within the directory currently being used for BMP files by JDHEmbed, the monitor panel will exhibit these problems. This occurs as JDHEmbed creates its own table of directory contents when a directory is opened to improve functionality, which is then made invalid. Do not change content of a directory whilst it is open in JDHEmbed.

FOR VERSION 1.0 USERS ONLY

Q: Vista - When running on Windows Vista the 'Help' function does not work.

A: Unfortunately Microsoft have provided no support in Vista for the Help system used with version 1.0. Microsoft do provide a download of this system (WinHelp) that Vista users may install. Alternatively we can supply a new help system compatible with Vista but it will only run on a stand alone basis, not integrated with the program.

Q: Error - When re-running an embedding after an error during ZIP, JDHEmbed has a fatal error, what can I do to avoid this?

A: This occurs when your hard disk where JDHEmbed is installed has no free space to store temporary files, you must free up some disk space and then re-start JDHEmbed.

Q: Invalid BMP - after a successful embedding I find that when trying to use the output file it is reported as an ‘Invalid BMP file'?

A: This occurs when your hard disk where JDHEmbed is installed has no free space to write the output file to, and it is only partly present when attempting to open the file, you must free up some space on the hard disk to avoid this.

Q: Install aborting - on Aborting from Install I get a "cannot deregister SETUP132.EXE" message

A: If this occurs, simply click the ‘Ignore' button and the program will continue to abort.
